Stronger Together Springfield

Welcome. We're so glad you're here.
Let's build a safer, more resilient Springfield. Together.

Our Mission

Picture

Bringing people together to build
more cohesive, safer, and
more resilient communities.

We strengthen communities by connecting people, building partnerships, learning from data, and supporting collaborative solutions that build on the knowledge and strengths already present in our community.

Our Current Focus: The Cardiff Model
Reducing and Preventing Violent Injuries

The Cardiff Model is an evidence-based way to reduce and prevent violence in communities. Below is a visual of Springfield's implementation of the model.

Data helps us identify patterns.
The knowledge and expertise of the people who live, work, and serve in those areas help us understand what's happening and what's needed in our community.

Springfield Cardiff Implementation Updates:

Since March 2026, CoxHealth Forensic Nursing Staff has been collecting anonymous, voluntary data on patients seeking treatment for injuries caused by violence. This data is NEVER tied to individual's names and or medical record.

MSU's Public Health Program has been analyzing this anonymous data monthly to help us better understand patterns in day of the week, time of day, weapon used, relationship between those involved, how many people were involved, and the age range of the patients.

Our Cardiff Steering Committee reviews this analysis monthly to look for patterns, identify locations that might benefit from additional support, and ensure effective implementation of the Cardiff Model.

Our first neighborhood partnership is currently underway! A few neighborhoods emerged as potential partnerships according to our data analysis. One of these neighborhoods stood out for their stellar community involvement, leadership, and passion for their neighborhood.

We're currently in our listening phase in our neighborhood partnership and are gathering the perspectives and wisdom from residents and the people who serve this neighborhood (community partners, businesses, churches, and schools).

We're hard at work and are looking forward to sharing out our collaboratively designed neighborhood next steps in just a few months!

Our History:

Krista Pyle founded Stronger Together Springfield in 2021. She taught for 20 years in public education and saw how much violence and trauma impacts our children, families, and community as a whole.

While walking alongside a couple of families attempting to leave abusive situations, she experienced how challenging it is to navigate through the amazing resources Springfield has to offer. After conversations with city council and countless community partners, she founded Stronger Together Springfield to bring more cohesion to existing resources, reduce toxic stress and increase resilience.

In researching successful strategies & programs for achieving these goals, the Cardiff Model and ACEs Aware frameworks stood out as excellent evidence-based initiatives to reduce violence and increase resilience. These have both provided foundational components for Springfield's current Cardiff Model implementation.

The Cardiff Model National Network is a team of experts currently implementing the Cardiff Model in their cities in the US and around the world. This amazing team of leaders has been invaluable in our planning and current implementation efforts. We are beyond grateful to have a brilliant, wise, and seasoned team to provide support throughout this process.

We are beyond excited to partner with those living in and serving Springfield and are looking forward to seeing what we can build together.

Why use the Cardiff Model?

The Cardiff Model is an evidence-based framework that's been successful in multiple cities around the world. It's been implemented in Cardiff, Wales since 1997. Studies between cities in the UK implementing this model and cities who weren't have shown significant reductions in violent injuries admitted to the hospital as well as violence reported to the police. This has led to significant cost savings in both criminal justice and healthcare costs.

Atlanta and Milwaukee have been implementing this model for around a decade and have each experienced successes as well. Reach out to us and we'd love to talk with you more about them!

Evidence that makes a difference:
✔  Supported through the World Health Organization’s  INSPIRE initiative.
✔  CDC Cardiff Model Toolkit provides implementation guidance for U.S. communities.
✔  Successfully implemented in the UK for decades.
✔  Long-term implementations have demonstrated reductions  in violence-related injuries and  significant public-sector cost savings.

What about privacy and HIPPA concerns?

We take data stewardship incredibly seriously. These voluntary, anonymous data are collected by well trained Forensic Nurses who are experts in navigating challenging conversations and protecting patient privacy. The Cardiff Model data obtained by these staff members is NEVER tied to a patients name, health record or other identifiers. The anonymous data for Cardiff is input directly into a mapping software that helps us analyze patterns. Access to this information and analysis is carefully restricted only essential members of our team.

Before sharing any part of this analysis with community partners or neighborhoods, we review data stewardship agreements to ensure we discuss this data with dignity and respect for the community members who have graciously agreed to share their anonymous data in the hopes of it preventing future violent incidents.

If you have any concerns about our process, we encourage you to reach out and would love to talk more.
